<isc:description>Pain Relieving Medicines and Your Digestive System I am sure that many of us have seen advertisements forAdvil, Excedrin, or Alleve. They are promoted as the solution to headaches, back pain, cramping, and arthritis pain. When we experience pain symptoms, weremember these commercials, and our first instinct is to take one of thosemedications as a solution to our problem. The makers of these over-the-countermedications spend millions of dollars on advertising campaigns to suggest thattheir product is the first thing we should reach for. Obviously theirmarketing works, because that is what we do, and they are very profitable. However, these marketing ads do not tell us much about their side-effects, or as I liketo call them- “undesired effects”. The FDA warns that NSAIDs May CauseBleeding, Ulcers, and DeathThe pain relieving drugs advertised on TV are part of acategory of drugs called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs).NSAIDs can be sold over-the-counter (Advil, Motrin, Alleve, Excedrin, Bayeretc.) or prescribed (Celebrex, Vioxx, Voltaren, Voltarol, and Zipsor etc.). You should also be aware that NSAIDs are also used in many cold and flu medications. If youread the labels on these medications you will see that they may cause gastric(stomach) bleeding. The FDA warns that: “NSAID medicines cancause ulcers and bleeding in the stomach and intestines at any time duringtreatment. Ulcers and bleeding can happen without warning symptoms and maycause death” The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that,“Even occasional users of NSAIDs—of any age—candevelop a peptic ulcer.” 3 In fact, themanufacturers of NSAIDs warn you to stop use if you experience any ofthe following signs and symptoms (all of which are related to stomach bleeding):●feel faint ●vomit blood●have bloody or black stools●have stomach pain that does not get better NSAIDS Damage YourIntestines And Stomach With Every DoseOne of the problems with NSAIDs is that theydamage the stomach and intestinal lining every time that they are ingested. Overthe months or years, after enough damage is done, your stomach and intestinesmay start to bleed and ulcers can form. Research has shown that Diclofenac (the generic name for Cambia, Cataflam, Voltaren, Voltarol, and Zipsor) candamage the intestines a second time after digestion. The liver rids the bodyof diclofenac by mixing it with bile and excreting it into the intestines. This gives it a second opportunity to damage the intestinal lining.1,2 Before Bleeding and Ulcers There Is: Leaky GutSyndromeLong before there is any evidence of stomach bleeding orulcers, NSAIDs can cause leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome is a conditionin which damage to the intestinal lining results in increased permeability. Your intestinal lining is made up of many cells tightlyadhered to one another. NSAIDs break down the lining by weakening thejunctions between these cells. This increases the permeability of the stomachand intestinal wall. When permeability is normal only completely digested foodthat is readily processed by the body is absorbed into our bodies. However, when the permeability of the walls is increased too much, then partiallydigested food can be absorbed across the wall. Our bodies are not designed toprocess these large particles. What is even worse is that drugs and wasteproducts that the liver excretes into your bowels for elimination arereabsorbed back into your blood stream. The absorption of partially digested food and waste productsinto our blood stream greatly stresses our metabolic system and as a result, wedo not feel good. Have you ever wondered why foods that never adverselyaffected you before, now make you feel not so great? Or have you ever wonderedwhy foods that you were never allergic to before, now cause allergicreactions? Most people shrug it off and say that they are just getting older. That is like saying that they don’t believe they have any control over theirsituation. That is wrong. You do have control. You have control to stopdamaging your digestive system and you have control to repair it. You simply stoptaking the substances that destroy your intestinal lining and consume nutrientsthat repair it. Substances That Damage Intestinal Lining And IncreasePermeability.○ NSAIDs-weaken the cellular bonds of the intestinal walls○ Dysbiosis-an imbalance of your GI flora○ Alcoholconsumption- weaken the cellular bonds of the intestinal wall○ Grains-Wheat, rice, and spelt contain lectins. Lectins are incompletely digestedproteins that stick to the intestinal walls and causes inflammation of the gut.○ Viruses-open the spaces between the cells of the intestinal wall. <isc:description> THE MAGIC SPICE: THAT KILLS CANCER, CURES ULCERS, FIGHTS JOINT & COLON INFLAMMATION, TENDONITIS, AND ECZEMAWritten By, Dr. John W Phelts, D.C.Turmeric root is used to make the curry spice which is very popular in the East and West Indies. It belongs to the same family as ginger, and as you can see it even looks like ginger on the outside. My mother is from Barbados, so I grew up accustomed to spicy curry dishes at a young age. I loved it, because it tasted good. Now I love it even more, because I know how beneficial it is to your health and preventing disease.Scientists have been studying a particular component of turmeric root known as curcumin. In recent years, curcumin has been shown to have very powerful anti-inflammatory effects. More recently, research has also revealed that curcumin is effective at fighting cancer. We are also finding out that inflammation is the root of all disease. Just as inflammation can be the venom that causes disease, curcumin is the anti-venom of all disease. Through research and clinical studies we have found just how powerful curcumin is, as you will also find out as you continue to read.CURCUMIN VS CANCERThe following is a list of the cancer fighting and cancer prevention properties of curcumin.Prevents tumor cells from multiplyingPrevents normal cells from turning into tumor cellsInhibits the formation of a protein that promotes tumor formationIt helps your body to locate and destroy cancer cells throughout your bodyHelps prevent the development of blood supply to cancer cells, so that they die and cannot grow (angiogenesis). 3CURCUMIN VERSUS INFLAMMATION OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM AND ULCERSA study in Thailand showed that 3 grams of curcumin/day in divided doses significantly reduced both duodenal and gastric ulcers in 12 weeks. 76% of the patients had complete healing of their ulcer. This is monumental, because it is difficult to heal ulcers with medication.1 A study in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s & Proctosigmoiditis/Colitis) showed improvements in inflammatory markers and disease measurements as well as a reduction or elimination of previous medications. The dose in this study was either 550 mg curcumin twice daily or 360 mg three times per day (1st month) followed by 360 mg four times per day. This is important, because the traditional treatment for Chron’s disease and other inflammatory bowel diseases is oral corticosteroids, which causes death of bone cells and destroys soft tissues, such as tendons.2Curcumin is considered to be extremely safe and no toxicity is noted even at very high doses.3Animal and cell culture studies have shown positive benefits for curcumin in diverse conditions such as ulcer prevention and healing, treating and preventing hepatotoxicity, direct anti-inflammatory studies (induced edema studies), reduction in advanced glycation end products (AGEs), antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-tumor to name a few.4,5OTHER BENEFITS OF CURCUMIN:Curcumin can also; reduce cholesterol levels, Prevent LDL oxidation, Inhibit platelet aggregation, Suppress thrombosis and myocardial infarction, Suppress symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes, Suppress symptoms of multiple sclerosis, Suppress symptoms of Alzheimer's disease,Enhance wound healing, Protect against liver damage, Increase bile secretion, Protect against cataracts, Protect against pulmonary toxicity and fibrosisIf you noticed, the studies cited in this article are based on the amount of curcumin given to the subject, not the amount of turmeric root. Your turmeric product should be standardized to be %95 curcumin. We carry three products that contain high amounts of turmeric root in our nutrition store. We chose these products, because they are standardized to be %95 curcumin.INFLAMMACOREContains large amount of curcumin and formulated to manage irritable bowel syndrome and inlammatory bowel diseases such as:chron’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and ulcers. <isc:description>Cancer cells feed on sugar! This is not new information, but it is not widely publicized information and it should be. Information like this is what America needs to know, especially since sugar is our most consumed substance. Traditional medicine uses this information to detect cancer cells in the body. After flooding a patient’s blood stream with sugar, a PET scan is done to find out where all the sugar aggregates. Cancer cells love sugar, so where the cancer cells are is where the sugar will be.In May 2010, the American Association for Cancer Research published a research paper from the University of California that compared the effects of glucose and fructose on cancer cells of the pancreas. They found that cancer cells feed on both types of sugar. One difference that they found between the two is that cancer cells use fructose to grow and multiply. This should raise a lot of concern, since fructose is the number one consumed nutrient in the USA. The researchers discovered that cancer cells use fructose to induce the transketolase enzyme, which they use to replicate the genetic material that they need to multiply. Fructose was found to be metabolized 250% faster than glucose, which means that the tumors can grow faster using fructose. Although, the researchers only studied pancreatic cancer, the authors suggest that these findings can also be applied to other types of cancer that use the transketolase enzyme including, cervical, colorectal (colon), thyroid, glioma, and renal (kidney) cancers. Reduce Sugar Intake To Help Your Body Fight CancerOur immune system is constantly on the lookout for abnormal cells in our body. It is the job of the immune system to detect these cells and destroy them. That job can become more tedious for your immune system if you are consuming large amounts of sugars that help the cancer cells multiply. You can help lower the burden on your immune system by lowering your sugar intake. Here are some simple ways to reduce your sugar intake:● Drink only water● Cut out all soda and juices from your diet (including fruit juices). ● Increase your vegetable intake, while decreasing the amount of grains on your plate at each meal.● Substitute a natural alternative sweetener like Stevia for your hot beverages and cereals instead of using sugar. Fructose Needs Special AttentionFructose consumption has many adverse health effects in addition to inducing tumor proliferation. To name a few, fructose is strongly linked to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, gout, insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, and poor cholesterol profile. As a result, experts recommend that fructose intake should be limited to 15 grams/day.To lower your fructose intake you should:● Read the labels on the food you buy. Avoid products that are made with high fructose corn syrup like some bread, soda, candy, crackers, cereal etc. High fructose corn syrup also contains mercury, which is a known carcinogen and is linked to Alzheimer’s disease.● Avoid agave syrup, which is high in fructose. ● Avoid Fruits that are high in fructose. Fruits contain both fructose and glucose. Some have high concentrations of fructose. Fruits considered low in fructose:Banana (unripe) Apricot, Blackberry, Guava, Fig (raw), Tangerine, Kiwi, Grapefruit, Lemon, Mandarin Cantaloupe, Lime, Orange, Peach, Pineapple, Nectarine, Plum, Watermelon, Raspberry, Strawberry, Avocado, Tomato.Fruits considered high in fructose:Apples (all), Banana (ripe), Dates (raw), Lychees, Grapes, Pear (all), Mango. In a related article I went over some other adverse health effect of fructose on the body. You can read that article here.reference: http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/content/70/15/6368.long </isc:description>

It occurs when the cartilage cells that line your joints start to wear away. Cartilage allow movement between the bones of your joint with very little friction. When the cartilage cells die, the bones become roughened and movement becomes painful. Many people with arthritis take NSAIDs to attenuate the pain. However, one of the undesired effects of NSAIDs is that they retard the growth of joint cartilage (NSAID and Osteoarthritis - Help or Hindrance?, P. Brooks, et al, Journal of Rheumatology, 1982; 9:3-5.) Although they decrease the pain, they actually make the problem worse by speeding up the degenerative process of arthritis. In contrast, Bee Propolis has been shown to induce cartilage growth in human cartilage tissue.

This Popular Spice Burns Fat, Improves Your Circulation, Aids In Digestion, and Reduces Pain I love spicy food and I am an advocate of using plenty of spices when cooking my favorite dishes. There is one spice in particular that I believe everyone should have in their kitchen cabinet. It has many medicinal properties and is packed with vitamins. The spice I am referring to is cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper is a “win-win” spice- because it makes your meals nutritious and adds plenty of flavor. Cayenne Pepper contains Capsaicin● Capsaicin is found in most hot peppers. It is what makes a hot pepper feel like your mouth is on fire. ● Capsaicin helps your body burn more fat during the day by inducing thermogenesis, which is the process by which your cells create heat energy. So, don’t be alarmed if you start to feel warm and begin to sweat lightly after adding a little cayenne pepper to your meal. It is a sign to you that your body is burning fat at an increased rate. ● Capsaicin also acts as an effective pain reliever. Your body makes a compound called substance P. When it is activated it sends pain signals to your brain and initiates an inflammatory reaction. When you apply capsaicin to a location of pain on your body, it depletes the amount of substance P in that area, thereby decreasing the sensation of pain. ● Capsaicin also helps to clear your nasal passages. If your nose is feeling a little “stuffy”, add a generous amount of cayenne pepper to your food, and you will feel some relief. I came across a line of spicy health beverages in Whole Foods Markets that uses capsaicin as their main ingredient. The line of drinks is called Prometheus Springs. Their products are a great way to get the benefits of capsaicin in drink form. You can find out more information about their products and where to find them at http://www.prometheussprings.com/ Cayenne Pepper is packed with the following vitamins: ● Vitamin A is an antioxidant that is great for your immune system, eyes, and intestinal lining.● Vitamin B complex is necessary for energy production.● Vitamin C strengthens your immune system and aids in the production of collagen. ● Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant in your blood vessels, helping to neutralize free radicals and improve your circulation. Free radicals are oxidized molecules that can damage blood vessel walls. ● Vitamin K is necessary for blood clotting which helps you to stop bleeding when you get cut. Cayenne Pepper aids in digestion● It stimulates gastric juice production to help your body break down food more efficiently. ● It helps cleanse the digestive tract● It also reduces gas build up. Cayenne Pepper increases the efficacy of other herbs and supplements.● Cayenne pepper contains oleoresin, which transports nutrients to where they are needed most.
Don’t be afraid to add a little spice to your food. When you enhance the flavor of your meal with cayenne pepper, you are: Enhancing your blood circulation, strengthening your immune system, neutralizing free radicals, decreasing pain and inflammation, improving your nutrition, improving your digestion, and increasing your metabolism. The next time you are in the spice aisle of the supermarket, pick up a bottle of cayenne pepper. It will add a little spice to your food and your health.

It is Fall, the season when you count on your immune system to fight off the common cold and flu. This is the time of year when you want your immune system functioning optimally. One of the most effective ways to do this is to improve the health of your digestive system. You may ask yourself, “what does my gut have to do with my immune system”? FACT: 80% of your immune system is located in your gastrointestinal tract? In light of this, wouldn’t it make sense to focus on your digestive system in order to have the greatest impact on you immune system? If our digestive tract is putting extra burden on our immune system (due to harmful bacteria or chronic inflammation), then how in the world can we expect it to effectively protect us from the common cold or flu at the same time? In your digestive tract you have colonies of bacteria and yeast that are collectively called your Flora. Ideally, it consists of 100% beneficial bacteria, but there is also the potential for there to be bad bacteria as well. The good bacteria help to digest your food, produce energy for your body to use, and make vitamins that your body needs. They also help your immune system by detoxifying our intestines, preventing yeast overgrowth. and producing antibodies that fight infections and kill bad bacteria, FACT: You actually have 10x more bacteria in your intestines than you have cells in your whole body. Science has come to the realization that our flora is crucial to our health and cannot be overlooked. Dysbiosis is an imbalance of your Flora, which could be due to bad bacteria or yeast overgrowth. Dysbiosis results in poor digestion, decreased energy, decreased vitamins, and more stress on your immune system. WHAT CAUSES DYSBIOSIS? ● Antibiotics- Antibiotics kill your good bacteria and allow an opportunity for bad bacteria to take root on your intestinal wall and for yeast to overgrow.● Antacids- Antacids decrease the acidity of your stomach. Your good bacteria thrive in an highly acidic environment and die in an alkaline environment. In contrast bad bacteria thrive in alkaline and low acid environments. ● Alcohol consumption● Diminshed HCL (hydrochloric acid) and/or bile production- HCL is the acid that your stomach produces. It is necessary for proper digestion and the survival of your good bacteria.● Yeast infections- cause an imbalance between intestinal bacteria and intestinal yeast.● Pain medication (Advil Motrin, etc.)- damages the lining of you stomach and intestines where your good bacteria live. If you look on the labels of these medications you will see a warning that it may cause gastric (stomach) bleeding.● Viruses WHAT SYMPTOMS MAY INDICATE THAT I MAY HAVE DYSBIOSIS?Those suffering from dysbiosis may experience a few or many of the following symptoms: Nausea ●Belching ● Bloating ● Heartburn ● Abdominal pain ● Cramping ● Abdominal Distention ● Depression ● Anxiety ● Constipation ● Diarrhea ● Increased Colon Mucus ● Flatulence ● Bad Breath ● Joint Pain ● Brain fog ● Memory Deficit ● Depression ● Low Energy ● Muscle Pains ● Skin rashes THE SOLUTION: GUT FLORA RESTORATION PROGRAMIf dysbiosis is not addressed, then it can lead to leaky gut syndrome. The good news is that dysbiosis is commonly addressed without the use of drugs or surgery. A sound flora restoration program should contain elements that 1) remove bad bacteria, 2) support the growth and strength of your resident good bacteria, and 3) repopulate your intestines with good bacteria. 1) Herbs that remove bad bacteria and yeast:Berberine Sulfate- stimulates the immune system to cleanse itself.Oregano Extract- helps remove fermented and harmful bacteria. Pau d’Arco- is effective at eliminating excess yeast such as Candida. It also helps to remove harmful bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, and Helicobacter pylori 2) Support Food For Your Good Bacteria (Prebiotics)Larch tree arabainogalctan is a prebiotic. Feeding your good bacteria keeps them healthy so they can multiply and replace the bad bacteria on the intestinal walls. It is also a soluble fiber and immune system booster. 3) RepopulateProbiotics are strains of good healthy flora that can be taken orally. They are great for individuals that have compromised levels of beneficial flora. They do help to remedy the imbalance, but they are a temporary solution, because they live in your gut for only two weeks.
